The political world was rocked to its core on Tuesday when Democrat Doug Jones was named the apparent winner in the special election to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ seat. Alabama is a deep red state that has not elected a Democrat to the Senate in over two decades. That man, Richard Shelby, would change parties and become a Republican and he still serves to this day in the senate. It was inconceivable, when President Trump selected Sessions as Attorney General, that a Democrat would fill his seat. This seat was so safe that Jeff Sessions ran unopposed in 2014. President Trump won Alabama by 28 points just over a year ago. This result is a political shocker in every sense of the word.

Jones was overshadowed greatly by his scandal ridden opponent Roy Moore, so he is a bit of a mystery. He has little experience in public life as he has never held an elected office before. Jones is a former U. S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. He was appointed by President Clinton in 1997 and served till 2001. His most notable accomplishment was the prosecution of two KKK members for the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama, on September 15, 1963. That bombing resulted in the deaths of four African-American girls. He has been outspoken in the need for the government to investigate civil rights era crimes. Past that, he is your typical moderate Democrat. With his victory, a question comes to mind. What kind of senator will Doug Jones make for Alabama?
