President Trump wants his border wall and he may have found a way to get it. He is willing to make a deal with Democrats on DACA, or the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, in exchange for funding for the wall. According to Time, the president said at a press conference, Saturday, “The wall is going to happen, or we’re not going to have DACA.” Trump added, “We all want DACA to happen, but we also want great security for our country.” He also maintains that Mexico will still pay for the wall, “…in some form, Mexico will pay for the wall.”
The Democrats have long maintained they would never vote to fund the border wall. Also, the Democrats’ base is adamant that they never cave on funding the wall. Yet, a deal on DACA is one of their top priorities. If they make this deal, they risk a bitter backlash from their base in an election year. This places a very difficult question before the Democrats. Should they make the deal and fund the border wall like the president wants?
