Should Planned Parenthood be defunded?

One of the most controversial organizations of the day is Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that provides low income women with vital healthcare that they can’t afford, such as mammograms, pap smears, birth control, and other healthcare needs. One of those other services provided is abortion, which is what makes the organization so controversial, and abortion accounts for about 3 percent of the medical services it provides annually. Planned Parenthood receives federal funds in the form of Medicaid reimbursements. This means that, in the opinion of the pro-life community, Planned Parenthood is using their tax dollars for abortions, and they find the mere idea of  even indirectly paying for abortions horrifying. So, should we defund Planned Parenthood?

Those who want to see Planned Parenthood defunded despise the organization. While abortion may only be 3 percent of what they do, to the pro-life community even one abortion is one too many. They see the people who run it as nothing more than murderers. People feel that they are being forced to pay for something they are morally against and they feel that is just wrong. Also, many are motivated by a debunked video that claims Planned Parenthood is selling dead babies’ body parts. They also feel, as a nonprofit organization, Planned Parenthood is not entitled to federal funds. People feel Planned Parenthood is a criminal organization and it should be defunded at all costs.

People against defunding Planned Parenthood point out that although 3 percent of the services provided involve abortion, the Hyde Amendment makes it illegal for any federal funds to be used in providing abortion except in the case of rape, incest, and the health of the mother. Defunding Planned Parenthood would be denying vital healthcare services to low-income women who can’t afford to go see a doctor or buy prescriptions. If Planned Parenthood is forced to close its doors, millions of women will be denied healthcare. STDs will increase. Women could have breast cancer and not know it, and not get the care they need. Also, there will be more babies out there who will be born into poverty, putting more strain on the social safety net in this country.

As for the argument that Planned Parenthood could get by on private donations, they point out this may be true for awhile, but private donations come in waves. There are times when there are plenty of donations, but, when times get tough economically in the country, the donations dry up and Planned Parenthood might then have to close its doors. Finally, abortion is legal and Planned Parenthood is doing nothing against the law.

Planned Parenthood presents the story of Becky and how they saved her from cancer:

The Issue

Should we defund Planned Parenthood? Is it an organization that commits murder with taxpayer dollars, or is it an organization that is simply providing much needed medical help to those that can’t afford it?

In support of defunding Planned Parenthood

Those who want Planned Parenthood defunded see it as an organization that commits murder on the taxpayers’ dime, and as an organization that already gets plenty of donations and doesn’t need taxpayer dollars.

In opposition to defunding Planned Parenthood

People who support Planned Parenthood see an organization providing vital services to the community, that is doing nothing illegal, and must be helped in any way we can.
