America appears to have begun another space race. This time it is with China, who has begun an ambitious lunar program. Monday, the president signed “Space Policy Directive 1,” a directive to establish the beginnings of a new mission to the moon, with a design towards a mission to Mars in the future. The president said, as reported by Reuters, “This time, we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint, we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars.” The president further added, “And perhaps, someday, to many worlds beyond.”
Currently, China is making plans to try to send someone to the moon. President Trump is changing the plans that were put in place under President Obama. In 2010, President Obama approved a plan to send a mission to a near Earth asteroid. Still, with this directive having been signed, a question comes to mind. Should mankind again go to the moon and then beyond?
MSNBC video of Jon Meacham discusses the final NASA mission to the moon, Apollo 17, which took place 45 years ago:
Should mankind try to go back to the moon? Are humans natural explorers, and outer space is the next place to explore? Or, is now not the time because we have too many problems here to deal with right now?
