Arizona Senator John McCain was awarded the 2017 Liberty Metal from the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Monday. In his acceptance speech, he warned against the growing nationalist movement in this country that helped propel Donald Trump to the presidency. As many know, McCain was captured during the Vietnam war, where he was routinely tortured. Senator McCain, who has served in the Senate since 1987, has long been a leading voice on foreign policy and the military. He has been referred to as a maverick for much of his time there and has embraced that reputation. Currently, he serves as chairman of the Armed Services Committee. Earlier this year, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. He still made it back to the Senate to be one of the few Republicans to break from the party and vote against their “skinny repeal” of Obamacare. With the increasingly ideological entrenched nature of politics, is John McCain good for American politics?
Those who feel John McCain is good for American politics see him as one of the few people left who vote for what they think is right, not what is best for their party. They see him as a statesman who is trying to get the Senate back to a place where you can actually make a deal for the betterment of the country. He is a straight shooter who is unafraid of what will happen when he speaks his mind. Finally, McCain brings class and dignity to Washington and the world of politics, which is becoming less and less evident in the way others are behaving.
People who feel Senator McCain is bad for American politics see him as a creature of special interests. They feel that after 30+ years in the Senate, he needs to step aside and let a new generation of people take the lead. When he votes against his party, it is now viewed by many as not voting for what is right, but as a betrayal of his party. There are those out there that feel, with his health issues, he is no longer fit to serve in the Senate and he should retire.
John McCain has served his country for decades, as a solider in the Vietnam War and as a member of Congress. His deeds and actions are to be respected and admired, whether due to his long imprisonment in Vietnam, where he refused early release just because he had a famous father, his battles for campaign finance reform, or his fight for our military in the halls of Congress. There will never be another John McCain.
CNN covered John McCain’s speech at Liberty Medal ceremony:
Is John McCain good for American politics? Is McCain a statesman whose presence in the Senate is a blessing? Or, has his time passed him by and he needs to step aside for a new generation?

John McCain is bad for American politics
People who feel John McCain is bad for American politics say that Senator McCain is an obstructionist who is more interested in himself than in the party. They see a man who is clinging to the past at the expense of the future.
John McCain is the poster boy for everything wrong with American politics today. His nickname should be "old two face".

McCain you are no longer an American hero. Your lack of support for the president is embarrassing time to retire.

Opinion: Looking forward to John McCain's retirement party. He's hurt us enough, while occupying a seat in congress. pic.twitter.com/itYuqQoKpf
